We were sitting aboard ship when the flag went up. Shortly after that, we went in. the Japanese had 22,000 men, all dug in, they had been fortifying that island for I don’t know how long. They had built in gun emplacements and living quarters, and they lived right in ‘em. You could look at the island, you wouldn’t see a soul, their object was to let us land and then open up, which they did.
