Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipLillian Pitts family has a 10,000 year history along the Columbia River Gorge.
When she was growing up, though, she didn't learn a great deal about her ancestry.
She explains that her father didn't want her to know as much, because he felt like she would have a better life if she “wasn't so Indian.” As she grew older, an elder showed her rock carvings and paintings that were thousands of years old, and she says she was hooked.
She learned a great deal about her cultural heritage at that point.
This print, Ancestors is from a series that she created in 2006 at Crow's Shadow Institute of the Arts on the Umatilla Reservation in Oregon.
