Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipJames Castle was born on a homestead in rural Idaho in 1899.
He was born deaf, and it's not clear if he ever learned to speak American Sign Language.
He created artwork constantly, and he often used soot from the stove mixed with his own saliva to create works such as these.
He was a prolific artist and worked his whole life creating images of anything that he could find around his homestead, where he lived.
His work really challenges our beliefs about disability, as well as the potential benefits and limitations of formal artistic training.
